Nepal is the country that imports many packaged edible products. Among many packaged products, Nepal also imports perishable items which may need to be kept in the cool place below the certain temperature. And when the required temperature is not maintained then those perishable items get damaged and cannot be consumed.
It's time to be smart consumer otherwise you will lose both the money and the health. Most of you go for shopping and see products which you need and check the expiry dates and if it is within expiry date then you purchase it. But what about other factors which need to be considered as you considered expiry date of the product. Today we will learn how to choose the products.
What are those other factors/points to be considered while purchasing products?
You can find answers to the question on the cover/packet/cane of the product.
Let us take an example of cheese and butter.
Cheese and butter normally have the expiry date of six months from the date of manufacturing when stored below 4° Celsius.
Just take a good example.
Milk: - As per the storage conditions mentioned on the packet of milk is that milk should be consumed within 72 hours (3 days) from the time of packaging when stored below 4° C. And we all may have faced this problem that sometimes milk leaves it property while boiling and becomes other product.
What may be the reason that milk changes its property and becomes other product?
It is an example and proof to show that what may happen if products are not stored as per storage guidelines. Milk changes its property in such a way that everything is visible to you. And now you may believe that what is the importance of storage conditions. In the same way, there are many products which we are consuming every day which decays, changes its property rapidly/slowly depending on its nature.
And for some products, if storage conditions are not maintained then products change its property but it may not be visible to us or we may not able to diagnose it by tasting. But these decayed products will definitely effect our health directly or indirectly.
In Nepal, it's nearly impossible to store the products as per storage guidelines. So, I recommend you to be alert and analyze the points that I have mentioned before buying any products.
Storage conditions are important factors for any product. If any product is not stored as per specifications, then it will start decaying/damage before the expiry date.
In the context of Nepal, is it possible to store products as per the specifications? What about those items which need to be kept in freeze at maintained temperature?
There are two reasons to justify that it is nearly impossible to preserve products as per specifications.
1. Long Load shedding hours
2. Selfish storekeeper
1. Long Load shedding hours: - In Nepal, we all know what we are going through and the condition of electricity in Nepal. Citizens of Nepal nearly suffers Load shedding of 10 - 14 hours a day. So how can freeze be on and run to meet the storage specifications of the product? Yes, some may use the alternative source of power like generators, solar panels but this practice is normally not followed.
2. Selfish storekeeper: - Some storekeeper will not switch on refrigerator/freezer just to decrease electricity bills. Storekeeper may just switch on the refrigerator/freezer just in the day time to show customers. And for this type of storekeepers, it can be the fool to think that they will use generator/solar panel to switch on the refrigerator/freezer.
CONCLUSION
So above mentioned were about how to choose the products. Before purchasing any product make yourself sure that you are buying the product which is not damaged. Read the specifications/guidelines mentioned on the packet/cover/can of the product. " SAVE MONEY AND SAVE HEALTH".
