Dashain (Nepali: à¤¦à¤¶ैं) or Badadashain (Nepali: à¤¬à¤¡ादशैं) or dashami (Nepali: à¤¦à¤¶à¤®ी) or Vijaya Dashami (Nepali: à¤¬िजया à¤¦à¤¶à¤®ी) or Navaratri or Durga Puja


    • is the 15 days long national (religious) festival of Nepal, the most important 
    • days are the 1st, 7th, 8th, 9th and the 10th.

    • the longest and the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar
    • celebrated by Nepalese people throughout the globe

    • not only the longest festival of the country but is also the one which is most anticipated

    • the festival falls around October-November
    • is also popularly referred to as BadadashainDasheraVijaya Dashami etc.

    • the goddess mother is worshiped in all her manifestations

Saraswati, Laxmi, and Ganesh
  • also known as Deepawali in Terai region of Nepal is a five-day-long Hindu and Buddhist festival celebrated in Nepal which comes soon after Dashain
  • one day is celebrated for goddess Laxmi and the other one is celebrated to worship brothers for their long life
  • However, all ethnic groups celebrate this festival
  • The festival is celebrated from Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna to Kartik Shukla Dwitiya every year
  • name Tihar means the festival of lights, where many candles are lit both inside and outside the houses to make it bright at night
  • the five-day festival is considered to be of great importance as it shows reverence to not just the humans and the Gods, but also to the animals like the crow, cow, and dog, who maintain an intense relationship with the humans

Chhat Puja
  • is an ancient Hindu festival and only Vedic Festival dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, Surya, also known as Surya Shashti
  • is performed in order to thank Surya for sustaining life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes
  • the Sun considered the god of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath festival to promote well-being, prosperity, and progress
  • In Hinduism, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders
  • The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering Prashad (prayer offerings) and aragh to the setting and rising sun
  • Although it is observed most elaborately in Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern UP and the Terai regions of Nepal in modern times
  • is more prevalent in areas where migrants from those areas have a presence, it is celebrated in all regions and major urban centers in India

Introduction
  • The festival of Bala Chaturdashi is a celebration in Nepal that is held at Pashupatinath    

    Temple
     near Kathmandu every year in late November or early December
  • Hindu pilgrims from all over Nepal, as well as India, gather at Pashupatinath temple, which is considered to be the most sacred temple of Shiva (Pashupati), in Nepal
  • An all-night vigil by the light of small wick lamps marks the beginning of Bala Chaturdashi.
  • Throughout the night the pilgrims chant and dance by the light of their lamps while paying homage to Lord Shiva
